Mike approaches woodworking from a fine arts perspective, building pieces that range from purely sculptural, to functional art pieces such as floor-lamps and tables. He draws together a wide range of personal interests to create unique works that have an other-worldly quality, and yet possess an appealing, organic familiarity.
"I am very interested in organic forms, and particularly in the structures behind those forms, so my challenge is to build internally coherent sculptures where the skin, or outer appearance, is a product of the internal structure." Mike prefers to use simple materials such as laminated birch and rice paper, but the finished works have an elegance and complexity that belies their elemental ingredients. His design process employs everything from hand sketches to CAD (computer aided drafting) as well as a healthy dosage of experimentation with materials and methods. |
